FIRESTOPPING

Firestopping systems are designed to seal gaps and voids created by cables, pipes, and other service penetrations in walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs. These systems prevent the spread of fire for intervals of 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes, allowing for safe evacuation. The process involves filling gaps with intumescent sealants that expand when exposed to heat, forming a robust barrier against fire. It’s crucial to consider factors such as the location of the penetration, whether the sealant will be exposed to vibration or thermal expansion, and the size and load-bearing requirements of the opening. 

A key element of fire safety is maintaining compartmentation in a building. Voids that allow the passage of services can compromise fire-resistant walls, leading to the spread of fire and smoke. Firestopping systems are critical in areas such as escape corridors, staircases, and hazard rooms (e.g., plant rooms and kitchens), where the risk of fire is elevated. By sealing these penetrations, firestopping systems ensure the integrity of fire compartments, making evacuation routes safer during a fire event. 

Firestopping involves using tested applications to maintain the fire-resistance of walls compromised by service penetrations. Typical firestopping solutions include a combination of high-density mineral wool and intumescent mastic. The wool is cut and friction-fitted around services, then sealed with mastic to create a complete fire and smoke barrier. These systems can provide up to four hours of fire resistance and are compatible with various wall types, including block, concrete, and plasterboard.
